BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Assemblyman Vince Fong is looking to combat illegal street racing by introducing Assembly Bill 2565, which imposes additional penalties for the exhibition of speed racing.

This includes engine revving and burning out vehicle tires in front of an audience in order to show off. As illegal street racing becomes a more prevalent problem statewide, AB 2565 provides an additional tool for law enforcement to help address and reverse this trend.

Under current law, street racing is illegal and penalties include driver license suspension. AB 2565 imposes the same penalties for the exhibition of speed racing as well.

“I authored this bill in response to what our local law enforcement officials have conveyed as a troubling and problematic trend in our neighborhoods,” said Assemblyman Fong. “We need to increase the penalties for illegal street racing activities to send a message that this activity will not be tolerated.”

The bill is pending referral to a policy committee for a hearing in the coming weeks.
