BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Two Bakersfield CHP officers are being praised after they helped deliver a baby on the side of the road.
On February 5th around 12:13 a.m., CHP received a call about a woman who was in labor and stopped on the right shoulder of southbound SR-99 just north of 7th Standard Road. CHP Officers K. Caid and F. Chavez responded to the call.
When they arrived, CHP says Officers Caid and Chavez realized the woman was in active labor. CHP says Officer Caid grabbed the medical supply bag while Officer Chavez put on protective gloves and assisted the woman. Officer Chavez then assisted the baby up to the mother as it was born and cleared its airway.
Baby girl Samantha was born on February 5 at 12:22 a.m. and came in at 5 lbs. and 17 inches long. Medical personnel arrived on-scene shortly after and transported mom and her new baby to Kern Medical. According to CHP, this is mom's fifth child.
