UPDATE (5:35 a.m.): According to BFD officials, when crews showed up they found the vacant building fully engulfed. 

Arson investigators are on scene and the fire is being called suspicious. 

Crews were able to contain the fire, but are still working to put it out. 

Westbound lanes of California Avenue between P and Union are blocked off. They will be closed off for about an hour.

The Bakersfield Fire Department is working a blaze in Central Bakersfield on Tuesday morning.

The fire was reported just after 4 a.m. in the area of Pershing Street, just off California Avenue and Union Avenue. 

No word on what caused the fire.
