BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Fourth of July is just more than a week away and many residents have been setting off fireworks at night throughout the city.
As a result, the Bakersfield Fire Department said it has received more than 1,000 calls for illegal fireworks since Friday night. The BFD said that number is far greater than in past years.
According to BFD fireworks can only be set off on specific days and times. They are currently illegal in the city of Bakersfield.
BFD also said they will be giving out citations to those who don't follow fireworks rules.
If you would like to report illegal fireworks call 324-6551 or 324-4542.
And the Kern County Sheriff's Office wants to remind the public that if they want to report illegal fireworks in their neighborhoods go to KernCountyFire.org.
They also urge the public to avoid calling 9-1-1 or their non-emergency phone number in order to keep the phone lines available for legitimate emergencies. You should only call 9-1-1 if there's an emergency injury involving fireworks.
