After conducting an extensive nationwide search for a new Superintendent, the Board of Education for the Bakersfield City School District (BCSD) is pleased to announce their final candidate, Mr. Harry Doc Ervin. It is anticipated that an employment agreement with Mr. Ervin effective July 1, 2016, will be approved at the March 29, 2016 Board Meeting.
Mr. Ervin will bring a wealth of experience to the District having served as a classroom teacher, school principal, Assistant Superintendent and currently, Superintendent for the Greenfield Union School District in Monterey County. Having served over 20 years in education, Mr. Ervin has dedicated his career to bringing equity and access to economically disadvantaged students from culturally diverse backgrounds and ensuring that high expectations lead to increasing student achievement for every student, in every classroom, every year.
Prior to Greenfield, Ervin served as the Assistant Superintendent of the Partnerships for Los Angeles Schools for six years where he established key initiatives that resulted in strong gains for all students, outpacing Los Angeles Unified School District and area districts in overall Academic Performance Index growth as measured by the California Standards Tests.
“I am excited about the possibility of being selected to serve as the next Superintendent for the Bakersfield City School District,” said Ervin. “I look forward to building on the District’s success, and over time, getting to know the people that make BCSD one of the best districts in California.”
Mr. Ervin, who is fluent in Spanish, received both his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies and his Master of Science in Education Administration from Alliant International University, and his
Administrative Credential from California State University, Fullerton. He is a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Ervin is married and has three sons and one daughter.
Mr. Ervin will replace former BCSD Superintendent Robert J. Arias, who resigned from his position last December, pending board approval. Kent Ashworth has been serving as Interim Superintendent of the District since January of this year.
