The Bakersfield City School District will be discussing mascots and team names that violate the California Racial Mascot Act again on December 13.
This is the second reading of the proposed revision and declares that the use of racially derogatory or discriminatory school or athletic team names, mascots or nicknames will be prohibited in public schools beginning on January 1, 2017.
Frank West Elementary and Wayward Elementary are two possible schools that may have to change their mascots because they resemble Native Americans.
Parents and the community are welcomed to come discuss potential changes during the December 13 board meeting at 6:30 p.m. at 1300 Baker Street.
