BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — They're the best high school athletes in Bakersfield. Saturday they competed to see who would make the best firefighter.
The Bakersfield Battle of Champions featured Bakersfield athletes from football to tennis to cheerleading and drumlines. Each athlete got one chance to go through a firefighter training course involving running up three flights of stairs, pulling up a fire hose, hitting a metal sled a couple feet and pulling a weighted sled about twenty yards.
California Assemblemember Rudy Salas organized the event to see which athletes who make the best firefighters. And also to encourage fire safety among teenagers.
