Spontaneous combustion caused fire at restaurant

Bakersfield Fire crews battled a fire at the Too Fat Sandwich shop located on 700 block of 18th St. Monday night .

According to the BFD, at around 8:02 p.m., they responded to a reported commercial structure fire at the resturant.

The first arriving BFD units reported “smoke showing” from the rear of a single-story commercial strip structure, "Too Fat" sandwich shop. B

FD Engine Company Firefighters deployed hoselines to the rear of the structure and controlled a fire in a loading/delivery area. 

BFD officials said that the fire damage was confined to the loading/delivery area.

BFD Arson Investigators determined the cause of the fire to be spontaneous combustion in cleaning rags.

Damage is estimated at $5,000 and no civilian or Firefighter injuries were reported.
