A bill that may upset many California students is moving through the state Legislature.
A new proposed measure would require school districts to develop policies that either prohibit or restrict the use of smartphones during the school day. The bill allows exceptions for emergency situations and educational purposes.
The bill's author, Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi says cell phones are often a distraction for students and that social media users exhibit depression and other mental health issues.
The bill will be heard in the Assembly Education Committee next month.
