BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Additional Bakersfield Police Department officers will be patrolling for distracted drivers throughout April in honor of Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
BPD says officers will be searching for driver's who violate California's hands-free cell phone law. According to BPD, 978 citations were issued last year to drivers who were texting, calling, or performing another function on their phone.
BPD says data from the California Highway Patrol shows 66 people were killed and more than 6,500 people were injured in 2017 from distracted-driving related crashes.
