Bicyclist dead after being struck by vehicle in Central Bakersfield

The Bakersfield Police Department is looking for a suspect vehicle believed to have struck a bicyclist Tuesday morning, killing the cyclist and fleeing from the scene.

According to BPD, officers responded to reports of a vehicle versus bicyclist injury accident in the area of Oak and Palm streets around 5:15 a.m.

When officers arrived they found a man had been towing a shopping cart with his bike when he was struck. The man sustained major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

BPD said the suspect vehicle is described as a late 1990’s-early 2000’s model GMC Sierra pick-up, possibly brown in color with front end damage.

BPD said this is the 17th deadly accident in city roadways since the beginning of the year.
