UPDATE May 3, 2018 -

The Bakersfield Police Department announced officers arrested a suspect for the murder of Marcos Vargas, a local attorney, Thursday night.

Police officials said 19-year-old Nicholas Charley Quintana was arrested in the area of Harris Road and Gosford Road.

Police said he was in possession of an illegal weapon.

He was taken into custody and booked into the Kern County Jail for murder and weapons charges.

On November 29, 2017 Bakersfield Police officers responded to the Golden Valley Luxury Apartments near Hosking Road and Monitor St. for an unknown situation.

When officers got on scene they found Vargas with multiple stab wounds on the ground. Vargas was pronounced dead at the scene.

In December of 2017, the Secret Witness of Kern County received an anonymous $10,000 donation from a Bakersfield local.

The reward is for information leading to the arrest of the suspect(s) responsible for the murder of Marcos Vargas.

It's unclear if a tip led to the suspect's arrest.

Quintana is due in court on Friday, May 4th for misdemeanor charges filed in July 2017 for battery and willful cruelty to a child.

He is expected in court the murder charge on Monday, May 7th and is being held without bail.

Police said the investigation is ongoing if you have any information you're asked to call the Secret Witness at (661) 322-4040 or the Bakersfield Police Department at (661) 327-7111.
