BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Bakersfield Police Department says a business owner took matters into his own hands Tuesday morning when he chased after alleged burglary suspects, and shot one of them.

According to Bakersfield Police, the business owner said he saw a vehicle that matched the description of a vehicle he says was involved in a burglary at his business. Police did not specify the business.

The business owner got in a car and began chasing the alleged suspect vehicle. The cars ended up on the bike path along the Kern River. At one point the cars drove over a rock embankment and drove toward the river near the Mohawk and Truxtun area.

"Protecting your property again with life threatening issues is not the best idea," said Officer Bryon Sandrini, of Bakersfield Police .

Police say the business owner then fired a gun toward the other car and hit one of the people inside in the stomach. That person was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.

“There were two people in the lead vehicle suspects," said Sandrini. "One suspect as been transferred to Kern Medical with no threatening injuries and the other suspect fled on foot."

No arrests have been made.
