The Bakersfield Police Department is currently investigating how a man ended up in the Mill Creek Canal near California Avenue and R Street.
BPD told 23ABC that at about 3 p.m. Thursday, there were suspicious circumstances in the area and they believed a body was in the water.
When they arrived, they said they found a man in distress, floating in the canal.
Officers jumped into the canal to help save the man as firefighters with the Bakersfield Fire Department assisted in the rescue.
At about 3:30 p.m., the man was pulled from the canal and taken to an area hospital.
Officials said that the man is recovering a nearby hospital.
