BAKERSFIELD CALIF. — Bakersfield Police said a man was stabbed multiple times Sunday night after he forced his way into an apartment shortly before 10 p.m.

Through the investigation, police found that 28-year-old Bernardo Zapien knocked on the rear door of the apartment residence and immediately began assaulting an adult man who opened the door.

Police said when Zapien made his way into the home, he continued assaulting the male resident and eventually a female resident in the home obtained a knife and started stabbing Zapien in an effort to stop the assault.

The male and female were able to force Zapien out of their home, according to officials. Police arrived on scene and arrested Zapien and he was also taken to a local hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

The male resident, who police said was assaulted by Zapien, was also taken to a hospital for shoulder injuries.

Zapien was booked for burglary and assault charges.

Police said the apartment residents did not know Zapien.
