BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — According to Bakersfield police, the officers who fired during the officer involved shooting Tuesday morning have been identified as Officers Matthew Aquino and Louis Rodriguez.
Officials were reportedly called to the area of Nelson Street and University Avenue just before 2 a.m. Tuesday for a domestic violence call. BPD says the man, now identified as 36-year-old Anthony James Gonzalez, was confronted by police in front of a home and then an officer-involved shooting occurred. Police say they recovered a gun they believe belonged to Gonzalez.
The woman who was involved in the domestic violence situation was not hurt. Officials also say there were other people in the home at the time of the shooting, but no one was hurt. The ages of those inside the home is not known.
Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene and both Aquino and Rodriguez were not hurt during the shooting.
The two officers have both been employed by the department for over 7 years and this is their first officer involved shooting, according to BPD.
BPD says the investigation is still ongoing.
