UPDATE (4:40 p.m.): One person was killed in a two-vehicle, head-on crash on Taft Highway Wednesday afternoon.

Bakersfield Police say the crash happened just after 3 p.m. in the 5500 block of Taft Highway. Investigators say a compact car veered into the opposing lane of traffic and hit a large utility truck.

The driver of the compact car suffered major injuries and died at the scene. The victim's name is expected to be released by the Kern County Coroner's office once next of kin is notified.

The truck driver was not injured and police say there were no other passengers in either vehicle.
