A small brush fire broke out behind a home in Tehachapi on Wednesday afternoon but was quickly contained by the Kern County Fire Department.

The fire started around 2 p.m. in the 22000 block of Mid Way in the Golden Hills area of Tehachapi. According to one of the homeowners they smelled smoke and when they went outside they found a grassy area behind their home on fire. As members of the family called 9-1-1, a relative, who also works for the Tucson, AZ fire department started putting water on the flames with a hose.

According to the KCFD, crews were able to put out the fire in less than 10 minutes. The fire did not reach any of the homes in the area and damage was limited to a fence behind one of the homes.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and an investigation is ongoing.
