Some California residents living in "high risk" areas could soon lose their fire insurance coverage or have to pay more for premiums.

California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones said the state's ongoing drought has become a "game changer" for insurance companies, which are now taking steps to protect themselves.

He said people who live in high risk areas are more prone to having their homes damaged by wildfires. He also said this can be an opportunity for residents to shop around for insurance.
