The California Department of Public Health has confirmed a West Nile Virus death in Imperial County, making it the first death related to the virus in California this year.
Officials also say that West Nile risks are increasing in the state.
Following the confirmed death, officials are advising residents to follow the three Ds below to help prevent contact with West Nile:
- Apply EPA-registered DEET
- Wear proper clothing/repellent during dawn and dusk
- Drain standing water
