79 Cadets with the California Highway Patrol will run from the CHP Academy to the State Capitol on June 12 at 5:14 a.m. to culminate more than six months of training to become officers.

The cadets will also gather at the California Peace Officers’ Memorial monument to pay their respects to the more than 1,600 men and women who have given their lives to serve and protect the public throughout California.

"As they honor their fellow officers’ final sacrifice, the cadets will be reminded of the dangers of the job they are about to undertake," said officials with California Highway Patrol in a press release.

The five-mile cadet run is a long-standing tradition that takes place two days before graduation. Family and friends of the cadets often stand along the route, waving flags and banners.
