BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The California Highway Patrol says they have arrested a man in connection with a shooting on the 99 near McFarland on Thursday morning.
According to the California Highway Patrol, 24-year-old Jesus Rojo Lopez from Delano was arrested in connection to the shooting. Lopez heard he was being sought in regards to the shooting and went to the Delano Police Department to "clear his name." After an investigation, he was arrested on two accounts of attempted murder.
The initial 9-1-1 call was made around 5:30 a.m. from a driver on Highway 99 that said a Mercury Grand Marquis was serving on the road and they suspected something might be wrong with the driver. That car then crashed into the bushes on the side of the highway, south of Sherwood Avenue.
When McFarland police responded to the scene, they noticed the two men were shot. The investigation showed they were driving when shots were fired from a passing vehicle towards the Mercury. The driver and passenger were both hit and taken to Kern Medical with moderate to major injuries.
The driver, 32-year-old Jesus Rodriguez Cruz of Delano was struck in the face and jaw and is currently in critical condition at a Fresno hospital. The passenger, 45-year-old Guadalupe Leon was hit in the arm.
