(UPDATE 11/5): The child has been identified as Francisco Reyes-Ortiz of Bakersfield.

A 10-year-old boy, who was a passenger in a car involved in a crash on Highway 99, has died.

According to the California Highway Patrol, three vehicles were involved in a crash on the 99 near Rosedale Highway on Wednesday morning.

The CHP says traffic came to a complete stop on Southbound 99 near Rosedale just before noon. A big rig was in the No. 3 lane waiting for traffic to move forward. A car carrying the 10-year-old was stopped behind the big rig. The CHP says another big rig, approaching traffic, failed to stop in time and hit the car from behind, forcing it into the other big rig.

The 10-year-old and a woman driving the car were taken to a hospital where the boy later died. The woman suffered major injuries.

The CHP says drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash.

An investigation is ongoing.
