BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The California Highway Patrol will be cracking down on seat belt violations during their Memorial Day Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP).

During the MEP, officers will patrol for traffic violations, specifically seat belt violations. Officers will also be on the lookout for distracted or impaired drivers.

CHP's MEP will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 24 and run through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 27.

CHP is also participating in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) "Click It or Ticket" campaign, which will emphasize seat belt usage from May 20 through June 2. According to NHTSA, in 2017 there were more than 10,000 unrestrained passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes nationwide.
