CHP: Distracted driver using cell phone causes serious Oildale crash

Posted

One person was rushed to the hospital with potentially major injuries after being hit by a distracted driver in Oildale, the California Highway Patrol said Monday.

Someone driving an SUV was headed eastbound on Olive Drive near Roberts Lane just before 2 p.m. Monday when they drove through a red light and ran broadside into a car, the CHP told 23ABC News.

The driver of the car was rushed to the hospital with moderate to major injuries, and the driver of the SUV wasn't seriously injured.

Witnesses told CHP investigators that the driver of the SUV was on a cell phone at the time of the crash.

"Put those (phones) away, pay attention to your driving, pay attention to traffic lights,"  said CHP Officer Kelly Olson. "Make driving your 100 percent priority when you're behind the wheel."

There's no word on whether the driver of the SUV may face charges in connection to the crash.
