CHP investigating crash that left Arvin man dead, driver in hospital

ARVIN, Calif. — The California Highway Patrol has released the name of a man who died after the vehicle he was in overturned in a field off Herring Road in south of Arvin.

CHP says that on Friday, April 5 around 4:21 p.m. 32-year-old Raul Lopez Perez was riding in the passenger seat of a Toyota pickup driven by Gregorio Lopez Cruz. The pickup was reportedly traveling east on Herring Road at an unknown speed before overturning at least once. Officials say Perez was ejected from the truck, sustaining fatal injuries. Perez was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver, Cruz, was transported to Kern Medical in Bakersfield with major injuries.

CHP also determined that both occupants were not wearing seat belts and alcohol may have been a factor in the collision.

The investigation is ongoing.
