Coroner: Man fatally struck by truck after walking into ongoing traffic on SR-178 identified

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — UPDATE at 4:20 p.m. :

The Kern County coroner has identified 27-year-old Igors Vasiljevs of Latvijas Republika as the pedestrian fatally struck by a truck after consuming alcoholic beverages and walking into ongoing traffic on SR-178.

A man is dead after consuming alcoholic beverages and walking into ongoing traffic on SR-178, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP says on May 6 around 2:35 a.m. a 27-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was observed walking in the middle of a lane on SR-178 eastbound. At this time, a 1999 GMC truck was reportedly driving on SR-178 eastbound, just west of SR-155, at around 55 miles per hour. According to officials, the driver of the truck observed the man walking in the traffic lane immediately before hitting him.

The man suffered major injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision. The cause of this collision remains under investigation.

Officials say, alcohol impairment for the pedestrian appears to be a contributing factor in this collision.
