CHP was busy on HWY 58 on Monday clearing at least 35 vehicles from the highway’s shoulder. According to CHP stopping on the shoulder to play in the snow is illegal.
Most families said they didn’t know they were trespassing until the CHP officers showed up.
Everyone playing in the snow received a warning and had 15 minutes to clear the area. If not, they would all be cited.
Since there’s no snow on the side of the highway, some were even crossing over fences to get to the snow.
CHP says there are designated areas to play in the snow and the highway’s shoulder is not one of them. Officers say the cars passing by at a high rate of speed on the highway have the potential to cause a serious accident.
According to the California Highway Patrol the only reason a vehicle should be on the side of the road is for a medical or mechanical emergency.
