BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — The Kern County coroner has identified the victim of a deadly assault that allegedly happened in Central Bakersfield.

Officials say on May 23 around 8:35 p.m. they received reports of screaming and fighting coming from the area of Harrier Way and Lewis Puller Drive, along the west side of Mill Creek Canal. When cops arrived on the scene they found 37-year-old Jarred Charles Heilman assaulted by another person. He was taken to Kern Medical, where he later died. A postmortem examination was conducted and the cause of death was a stab wound and the manner was homicide.

After interviewing 44-year-old Terry William Turpin, BPD was able to link him to the homicide. Turpin was booked into the Kern County Jail for murder.

Since the incident, officials say they conducted a joint evidence search in the area of the crime scene.
