BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. – California State University, Bakersfield is hosting a New Generation of Educators Initiative (NGEI) Convening to share best practices in teacher preparation across 11 California State University campuses.
Breakout sessions will be held at Student Housing East today at 12:45 p.m. and tomorrow at 11:45 a.m.
The event is hosted by the Department of Teacher Education at CSUB. Several topics will be featured: selection of clinical placement sites, recruiting, selecting and supporting mentor teachers, providing quality and calibrated feedback to residents in teacher preparation programs, and the use of candidate data management systems to inform program decisions.
"We are honored to have been selected to host the NGEI Convening this year," said Dr. Kristina LaGue, professor and chair of CSUB's Department of Teacher Education. "This is a unique and valuable opportunity to share best practices across 11 CSU campuses. Each of these teams has displayed a commitment to preparing teachers with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to have a significant and positive impact on the lives of children and families."
The goals of the NGEI Phase Two are:
advance K-12 STEM learning in California schools;
foster partnerships between university-based teacher preparation programs and local school district partners;
prepare teachers who can lead instruction aligned with California Standards;
support practice-based clinical training; and,
support and facilitate the effective use of data for continuous improvement.
Under the NGEI initiative, CSUB's Teacher Education Department has established the Kern Urban Teacher Residency program in partnership with the Bakersfield City School District. This includes a Saturday STEM Lab School on the CSUB campus for fifth- and sixth-graders from BCSD.
The two-day NGEI Convening will include presentations from CSU Bakersfield faculty and other CSU campuses; the Seattle Teacher Residency; the National Center for Teacher Residencies (NCTR); and breakout sessions with topics such as Bank Street, Sustainable Funding Project, California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, CSU Center for Teacher Quality, LA Educator Pathways Partnership, Observation Rubrics and Feedback Process, and Academic Diagnostics.
