The Kern County Fire Department says residents within the county need to make sure their homes and surrounding property are ready ahead of fire season. If they fail to do so, they could face fines.

June 1 is the deadline for residents, who live within the State Responsibility Area (SRA) to clear a defensible space around their homes. This incudes removing brush, cutting back trees and picking up trash to prevent against potential fires. If you are unsure if you home falls within the SRA area, click here to find out.

Kern County Fire has listed guidelines on their website to ensure homes stay safe and fires don't spread quickly. You can access those requirements here.

If a space is not cleared when KCFD begins their inspections on June 2, homeowners can face a fine of $500.
