GRAPEVINE, Calif. - This morning the CHP is investigating a deadly crash on the I-5 north of Wheeler Ridge Road.

Officials say just before 11:00 p.m. an unidentified man was driving southbound on the 99 at Herring Road, where he collided with a Toyota.

The man then fled the scene, heading southbound on the I-5 at a high rate of speed.

The CHP said the driver approached the Laval Road off-ramp and turned his car to the right, traveling off the roadway and onto the right shoulder.

The man continued without slowing down and hit a steel guardrail and a two-foot pole.

He died from the collision and his car later burst into flames.

Officials say an unknown citizen pulled the driver’s body from the car and left the scene.
