In the past month at least 8 farm workers have died on their way to work.
Monday three women diedwhen they attempted to make a U-turn in front of a big rig on Highway 46 near the 99 freeway. Tuesday, September 22, a man and a woman died after they ran a stop sign at Buena Vista Blvd. and Tejon Highway. On August 27th,three Wonderful Company employees died after swerving into oncoming traffic.
All were during the early morning hours, all were farm workers heading to their jobs, according to California Highway Patrol.
Robert Rodriguez said this is a very busy time for farm workers, as it is harvest season. He says many of the workers are traveling on two land highways which are "stereotypically more dangerous roadways in Kern County."
Rodriguez cautions all drivers to take extra time in their commute to stick to the speed limit and be aware of their surroundings.
