700 Bakersfield students got an early head start on the school year during Dignity Health's Back2School Fair.

The event was Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon, offering Bakersfield's eastside free backpacks, some with school supplies inside, to the first 700 K-12 students to show up. Local barbers and cosmetologists also volunteered their time to cut as many students' hair as they could until noon.

Organizers said the event is to help local student be prepared and feel good about themselves heading into the new school year. They hope the money the families saved from the Back2School Fair will help those families reinvest in other parts of their lives like healthier foods and new clothes.

This was the third year of the Back2School Fair. The event also featured free lunches, carnival-style games, music and face painting.
