BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — On Monday, Americans will remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., an advocate for non-violent protest during the civil rights movement. Right her in Bakersfield, there are a number of events planned to honor the civil rights hero.
To kick things off, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Kern County Inc. and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Committee will host the 20th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee Community Awards Breakfast. The event will take place at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center at 1000 S. Owens St. from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Then a free luncheon and warm clothes giveaway event is scheduled to happen from noon to 2 p.m. at the same location.
The community of Lamont is honoring MLK with their 4th Annual MLK Day Clean Up. The cleanup is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 10420 Myrtle Avenue.
A community march is scheduled to start at 6 p.m., as hundreds gather at the People's Missionary Baptist Church. A program will begin following the march at 7 p.m.
