On October 24, Patrick Mara, the former Bakersfield Police Department detective embroiled in a drug scheme while a member of the force, was sentenced to five years in prison and five years probation.

Mara, along with Damacio Diaz, took plea deals after it was learned that, while members of the police department, they stole drugs from suspects and turned and sold them.

Earlier in October Diaz, whose life was depicted in the Disney movie "McFarland, U.S.A", was sentenced to five years in prison.

On October 24, the Department of Justice also held a press conference to discuss both cases.
