Fatal crash in Taft

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - California Highway Patrol says two people have now died from their injuries after a car collided head-on with another in Taft Friday.

According to CHP, the crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Copus Road just west of Old River Road.

They say Silva Gonzalez was driving his 2003 Honda in the eastbound lane of Corpus Road at about 55 MPH. They say he allowed his car to cross into the oncoming lane of traffic where he collided head-on with a 2002 Chevy. Silva suffered major injuries. One of his passengers, identified only as male, died at the scene.

Another passenger, now identified as 24-year-old Edith Bautista Silva, was transported to the hospital with major injuries. The Kern County Coroner's Office says she passed away Monday evening from her injuries.

Two other people in the Chevy suffered minor injuries.

CHP says alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash. The collision is still under investigation.
