A fire in east Bakersfield displaced three families and sent three men to the hospital.
Witnesses say the fire started with a mattress outside of an apartment complex on Virginia Street. The fire spread up a palm tree and into the apartments on the second story.
Three men were taken to a local hospital after suffering possible smoke inhalation. Their condition is unknown.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
