Pete Hein has been identified as the firefighter who died while battling the Stagecoach Fire in the Kern River Valley.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Forest Service reported that a firefighter suffered "an acute medical emergency and passed away due to complications while assigned to the Stagecoach Fire."

The Big Pine Volunteer Fire Department later identified Hein as the firefighter who died.

According to a Facebook post, Hein was a member of that department for more than five years. He had previously retired from the Cal Fire Bishop Fire Camp as a captain before joining the Big Pine department. He also worked as a firefighter with the Inyo National Forest.
