BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Five people have been displaced following a garage fire in Oildale Tuesday evening.

The Kern County Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 2000 block of Esther Drive near W. China Grade Loop and Airport Dr. around 5 p.m.

When firefighters arrived they found the garage portion of the home completely engulfed in fire.

Firefighters assessed the need for any potential rescue and started to extinguish the fire. Crews worked to keep the damage to the living areas of the home to a minimum, while protecting exposed vehicles and a neighboring house from the fire.

Five people were displaced. Firefighters on scene were not able to confirm the presence of working smoke alarms in the home.

KCFD wants to remind the community to have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in the home.
