A former champion wrestler was killed on Sunday near Pyramid lake in a car accident.
According to the Fresno Bee, 25-year-old Matt Hickman was killed on his way home to southern California from Bakersfield. Hickman was in town for the CIF State Wrestling Championships.
CHP officers say Hickman was involved in a single vehicle accident while driving south on Interstate 5. The Bee reports that officers believe Hickman got out of his car after the accident and tried to run across lanes on the north side of the freeway when he was hit by a car. The accident happened at around 4:50 a.m. Hickman was pronounced dead on scene.
Hickman was a former wrester for Fresno City's wrestling program for three years starting in 2011. He won a state championship in 2012.
The CIF State Wrestling Championships were held in Bakersfield from March 3rd to March 5th.
