When the air quality exceeds 150 Air Quality Index (AQI), Golden Empire Transit (GET) said they will allow free rides. But Friday GET officials said they have not received funding and are not offering the free rides.
In May GET officials released a press release stating they would offer free rides during unhealthy air quality day. They said they would offer the free rides to help encourage drivers to park their cars and use public transportation to try to reduce pollutants emitted into the air. However, Friday GET officials confirmed they have not started to offer those free rides due to lack of funding.
Officials said funding for this program is supposed to be provided by a Congestion Mitigation Air Quality (CMAQ) grant. And they are hoping to have the funding by September to be able to offer free rides the next time the AQI exceeds 150.
