Governor Jerry Brown signed off on a bill last week that seeks to improve "media literacy" among California students.

Lawmakers said that the measure will help students spot fake news by evaluating different sources of information and distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources online.

The bill tasks the Department of Education with compiling and publishing a list of media literacy resources for teachers. Lawmakers behind the measures said they were inspired by a Stanford University study that found that more than 80 percent of middle school students had difficulty differentiating between ads and news articles.
