Bakersfield firefighters found two gallon gasoline containers in East Bakersfield prompting a Hazmat call-out.

At about 1:25 p.m. Monday, the hazmat response team from the Bakersfield Fire Department went to the area of 2691 Mt. Vernon Avenue regarding a container with an unknown type material in it.

First arriving BFD Firefighters reported a two (2) gallon gasoline container with an unknown type liquid material inside to the rear of this address.

BFD Engine Company Firefighters isolated the area and denied entry to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. BFD Hazmat team members entered the “exclusion zone” to draw a sample of the unknown substance for analysis by the BFD technical referencing team.

Crews are in the process of identifying the substance and/or any existing hazards. BFD Prevention Services personnel are on scene working on a plan for cleanup and disposal.

No Firefighter injuries were reported. Situation is ongoing. Avoid the area.
