Hundreds said goodbye to Helen Chavez today, the wife of activist Cesar Chavez.

The family hosted the funeral mass in Tehachapi lead by Cardinal Roger Mahony.  Guests included actor Edward James Olmos, Dolores Huerta and Kerry Kennedy, the son of Robert Kennedy.

Three of her sons, Fernando, Paul and Anthony spoke during the mass, saying their mom always pushed their father to continue fighting for farm workers rights, encouraging him to never give up.

After the mass, Chavez’s body was taken to Cesar Chavez’s National Monument in Keene for a burial ceremony where her children and the public were able to pay their last respects.

Helen’s body now rests next to her husband at the national monument where he was buried 23 years ago.
