The Holiday Cottage opened its doors on Monday, kicking off the 30th year of helping local foster children this holiday season.

The Kern County Department of Human Services opened the Holiday Cottage in northwest Bakersfield on Nov. 27.

Dozens of people stopped by the cottage the day of the grand opening. Cottage coordinators said Monday was the busiest grand opening they've seen.

The process of giving a gift to a child is simple. Anyone who would like to donate to a child can pick a sheet of paper from the display wall with a child's name and gift wishes on it.

The wishes have a list of two gifts the child would like. Holiday Cottage coordinators said fulfilling both wishes isn't mandatory; they only ask that at least one wish is completed in full.

The unwrapped gift can be dropped off to the cottage within three days.

The Holiday Cottage is located at 2765 Calloway Dr. Suite #104, near Rosedale Highway. It's open everyday through Dec. 11, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
