TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Here are the best recent home video releases:
Central Intelligence
Dwyane Johnson and Kevin Hart team up for a comedy that recalls the buddy cop flicks of the 80s in the vein of "Lethal Weapon" and "48 Hours." The former mismatched high school pals play bumbling CIA operatives who work to take down a global threat. Cranking out laughs and thrills with regularity, this is one of the best reviewed action comedies of the year. Extras in the Blu-ray/digital copy combo include director commentary, a gag reel, alternate scenes and a dance-off.
The Lion Guard: Unleash the Power
Kion, one of Simba's cubs leads a honey badger, cheetah and hippo in the ongoing struggle against hyenas and other nefarious -- but largely harmless -- animals in the family kingdom. The joyous and exciting series has established itself as a high point in Disney Junior programming, rounding up a savvy voice cast that includes Rob Lowe, Gabrielle Union and Max Charles. The six-episode set is a solid sampling of the way the show manages to be a solid follow up to the classic film and its middling sequels.
The Shallows
Blake Lively stars as a medical student vacationing on a secluded beach in this "Jaws"-like tale of death and survival as she is badly injured and forced to fend off an attack by a great white. Stirring performances meld with excellent effects in the chilling tale. Extras in the Blu-ray/digital copy combo include deleted scenes, as well as featurettes on the location, special effects and advice on how to survive a shark encounter.
Valley of the Dolls: The Criterion Collection
This 1967 cult classic gets the royal Criterion Blu-ray treatment, blessed with a gorgeous 2K digital restoration and scores of vintage and modern tributes. Patty Duke, Sharon Tate and Barbara Perkins make their way through the wild, unforgiving world of the entertainment industry. Extras include Perkins' 2006 commentary track, as well as a tribute booklet and a fresh retrospective interview with a film historian. There's also footage of the premiere and a pair of promotional reels.
