How to avoid an attack and what to do if you are a victim

The tricks you can use to stay safe

With social media posts circulating about women being followed in shopping center parking lots, it's crucial to learn how to defend yourself. Local martial arts instructor Jon Cobbs says the secret is to walk with confidence so you don't look like an easy target. If someone does approach you, the top three defense moves are:

1. Scratch their eyes with your hand in a claw shape

2. Flex your hand and hit their nose with your palm

3.  Flex your hand and hit their chin/throat with your palm

These moves are best because these areas are most susceptible to pain.Other tools you can use if you see someone approaching:

1. Yell the word "HELP," don't just scream so people know it's an emergency

2. If you see someone in a parking lot or near your car, go back inside

3. If you feel unsafe, request an employee or security guard escort you to your car

Jon Cobbs teaches self defense classes at Japan Martial Arts Academy.
