In tragedies like the shooting in Orlando, which left dozens dead and dozens more injured, parents are often left to answer the difficult questions children may have.
"If questions do come up, the best thing to do is to go ahead and confront it and be honest with the questions that the children are asking, said Julian Love, Intervention Specialist.
Love says when national tragedies do hit, some kids can experience a behavioral change because they do not know how to express their feelings.
"One of the things as parents we can always be is aware and kind of ask questions to see what is going on or what's going through their minds," said Julian Love, Intervention Specialist.
For parents looking for ways to talk to their children about the mass shooting in Orlando or other tragedies, Love says parents should:
- Reassure children that they are safe
- Explain that feeling upset is normal
- Be sure to make your explanation is age appropriate,
- Monitor your child's behavior
- Stay calm.
