Man survives jump from Chester Ave bridge in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A person jumped from the Chester Ave. bridge onto Highway 58 in Bakersfield on Wednesday.

According to the Bakersfield Police Department, officers responded to the scene of an apparent suicide attempt on Wednesday at around 3 p.m. He reportedly jumped from the overpass of Chester Ave onto the eastbound lanes of Highway 58.

Witnesses to the incident stopped to render help.

The man was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Highway 58 was shut down for a short time during the incident.

According to Kern Behavioral Health and Recovery, suicide is a public health issue. They have hotlines available for those in crisis, available 24/7 at 1-800-991-5272, along with the Suicide Prevention hotline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) and Substance Use Division Access Line at 1-866-266-4898.
